The Spirit of the Newspaper

A murderer took the lives of many people today in Maryland at the offices of a local newspaper, The Capital Gazette. One of the reporters spoke words (via Twitter) that evoke in my mind the spirit of the newspaperman. Kudos to Chase Cook and here's hoping there is a print edition tomorrow.

Newspapers Outside the Train Windows

I am reading Graham Greene's The Orient Express. Early on (page 7), Greene sets a scene as passengers are boarding their train and settling in to their seats.

The French language aside, my loyal readers know me to a loyal newspaper guy. How great to be getting settled on a train and have "newsboys" outside your window yelling the name of their newspapers for sale!

Now, if you are anything like me, the train station or airport newsstand is the first stop after my arrival, so I would not necessarily benefit from these guys just outside the train window, but wow, I would love to see people outside my window peddling newspapers.

WSJ: In Praise of the News on Paper

In the Wall Street Journal this morning, there is a short editorial by Barton Swaim on newspapers and why they still matter. This is a topic I have talked about before, and this was a nice reminder: Newspapers, the physical ones, not just the online versions, need to have a future. For better or worse, newspapers provide a clearer understanding of the world with less nonsense, than any other source. Our civility and our discourse could benefit from not only more newspapers, but from more people getting their hands on them and off of their "smart" devices for 30-45 minutes each day.

London Newspapers Olympic Coverage

Loyal readers know how I'm a newspaper junkie. So, when I saw this picture of the Saturday newspaper coverage in London of Friday's opening ceremony, I had to post it.
